After much speculation and controversies, Udta Punjab finally released this Friday. It is no less than a victory that the film even released and too with just one cut when Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) demanded 89 cuts including title change. The film is directed by Abhishek Chaubey, starring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Daljit Dosanjh and Kareena Kapoor. It was already in deep water even before it was released and to make matters worse, it was leaked online a day before its release date. But even after all this it managed to live up to its hype.

The movie depicts the drug abuse problem prevalent in Punjab and shows how a whole generation is neck deep in drugs and how it is affecting whole of the Punjab. The movie follows the life of all 4 characters. There is nothing common among any 4 of them, the only connection between them is Drugs. Tommy Singh (Shahid), is a rockstar with high dependency on drugs and if not knowingly making it even look cool to take drugs among his young followers. Mary Jane (Alia), A Bihari migrated to Punjab to work in fields after suppressing her dreams of becoming a state level hockey player, finds herself in deep trouble just because she wanted to have a good time. Sarjeet (Daljit) a corrupted cop himself, turns to a new leaf after trouble comes knocking over his door when he finds out that his own brother is addicted to drugs and Dr Preet (Kareena), A compassionate Doctor, whose goal in life is to eradicate this problem in Punjab.

The movie is everything you don’t expect in a commercial Bollywood movie, its raw, dark, and real. It takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. It is a very honest attempt at showing the real drug problem in Punjab and how everyone from ministers to police is involved in this. The filmmakers did a commendable job in this one. The songs are used wisely and at the perfect oment. They don’t seem out of place at all and neither does the expletive language used in almost every dialogue because let’s face it, many of them talk in this manner only.

The actors did a convincing job. Shahid’s performance was one of the best in his career so far with the portrayal of troubled rockstar, who is on a road to redemption. Diljit couldn’t have asked for a better debut entry in bollywood and gave a sincere yet confident performance. Kareena Kapoor did her best to portray this caring and determined doctor and her romantic scenes with Diljit were cute and funny. Alia Bhatt gave a stellar performance and her non glamour, bihari avtar with her outstanding acting could make her one of the top choice for awards this year.

This movie truly soars high with its originality. It’s a must watch for audience who loves to see movies of good content with striking reality mixed with entertainment flair.
