All the problems of the world could be settled easily if men were only willing to think. The trouble is that men very often resort to all sorts of devices in order not to think, because thinking is such hard work.
Thomas J. Watson
IBM is often better known as the company which made the ThinkPad. A fine piece of technology if you ask me.
But not many know the immense contribution they have had to the general progress of mankind. Based on Thomas J. Watson’s philosophy of ‘Think”, IBM research has made advancements that are commonplace now but are no less than miraculous. Founded in 1911, the company had its centennial celebrations last year. For the occasion, they released a series of videos.
This is, quite simply, one of the best short documentaries I have ever seen. It makes you marvel at our progress as a race. The stories are so heartfelt and well-told that I HAVE to remark on the brilliant production quality. From bar codes to the Genome project to IBM’s staunch anti-discrimination stand, this is beautifully narrated. And it features great music by Philip Glass.
Don’t take my word for it though. See for yourself.
My favourite: The Apollo XIII story.
