In this week’s Mashup Monday installment, the Dirty Heads jump back to 1966 to color The Rolling Stones‘ “Paint It Black” with an acoustic reggae interpretation complete with a mid-song rap, prominent bassline and hand percussion.?

“Rather than cover it perfectly,” explains Dirty Heads singer Dustin Bushnell of the band’s take on the Stones classic, “I was like, ‘how about we do this little dub in the middle.”

The Stones took “Black” all the way up the Hot 100 in the summer of 1966. Forty-four years later, the reggae-rock Dirty Heads have been having their own summer fun on the charts, recently entering the Hot 100 and to No. 1 on the Alternative Songs chart with “Lay Me Down,” which features Rome, singer of Sublime’s new incarnation, Sublime with Rome.
